About

Tom McKinney (American, b. 1941) is a distinguished illustrator, prolific watercolorist and master portrait artist from Philadelphia.

Having studied at the John Hussian School of Art and the Philadelphia College of Art, McKinney’s art speaks to the vibrancy and resilience of African American families, history and culture. His portraits demonstrate a profound understanding of his subjects, ranging from legendary jazz figures like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Billie Holiday to poignant portrayals of Philadelphia residents and others.

McKinney’s depictions of both the young and the elderly are praised for capturing a realness that evokes deep emotion. Whether painting the innocence in a child's eyes, the wisdom in a grandmother’s glance, or the warmth of a father’s embrace, his mastery of realism remains consistent.

McKinney’s artistic journey began at West Philadelphia High School, where he first showcased his work at the Rittenhouse Art Show in Center City. Over the past seven decades, his career has spanned the globe, with exhibitions across the United States, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.

His painting, "Pretty Eyes," featuring a young African American girl with striking eyes, remains an iconic work within the art community. McKinney’s portraits of African American leaders—including Frederick Douglass, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and President Barack Obama—are among his most prized works, serving as vital records of a history that must not be erased.

A true Philadelphia legend, McKinney’s career includes being commissioned by WDAS Radio and serving as the featured artist for the October Gallery’s inaugural exhibition on Lancaster Avenue in 1985. The entertainment community was among the first to embrace McKinney’s art. Live performers, including Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, Grover Washington, Jr., and Cicely Tyson collected original pieces well before his work gained national prominence. During the late 80s, McKinney’s artwork began to achieve significant global recognition, largely due its prominent placement on several major television sitcoms. Featured works appeared on shows such as "Bustin' Loose" and "Frank’s Place" on CBS, as well as NBC’s "The Cosby Show."

In his current installation, Beautiful People, McKinney’s signature style is showcased through a selection of portraits that highlight beauty in the everyday, in seemingly ordinary moments. His use of layered washes and meticulous attention to softening edges creates a harmonious palette on each canvas, effectively bringing his subjects to life.

Today, McKinney dedicates his time to commissioned works while enjoying his extensive jazz collection and his beloved cats. His work is currently held in both institutional and private collections nationwide.
